Testing Treatments

  • How do we know whether a particular drug, therapy or operation really works, and how well?
  • How reliable is the evidence?
  • Are clinical trials truly unbiased?
  • And is current research focused on the real needs of patients?

Although not specific to ITP, these questions are addressed in the book Testing Treatments by Imogen Evans, Hazel Thornton, Iain Chalmers and Paul Glasziou.

In the foreword to the book, Ben Goldacre of badscience.net writes "If you work in medicine, the chapters that follow will probably stand head and shoulders above any teaching you had in evidence-based medicine." It is an easy book to read and will be of benefit to any doctor or patient interested in evidence-based medicine.

The 1st and 2nd editions of the book are freely downloadable from their website here or to purchase in book form from Amazon.co.uk.
