Nplate (Romiplostim)

Nplate (Romiplostim) has not been approved by NICE for use in the NHS for the treatment of ITP.

The ITP Support Association’s membership ranges from some whose disease is mild and well controlled to others with a severe and life threatening condition who are refractory to current treatments. For the latter group there is a great need for a new approach and many have their hopes pinned on Nplate becoming available throughout the UK.

We are disappointed with the decision of NICE but recognise it has a very difficult job to do, particularly in the current climate of economic downturn. Pharmaceutical companies are required to take their drugs through an increasing number of hoops and hurdles to apply for a licence and we then complain that their drugs are too expensive for the NHS. The ITP Support Association sees no easy answer, but nevertheless, believes that a case should be made for this drug that could be life-saving for a limited number of people.
