Thrombocytopenia in pregnancy
First found to be common when automated blood cell counters introduced
The large majority have “gestational thrombocytopenia” which is benign and self-limiting, no risk of bleeding in mother or baby
May be difficult to distinguish from ITP where maternal autoantibodies can cross the placenta
Low platelets may indicate pregnancy complications
