ITP Medical Seminar 2004

1. On April 2nd 2004 we held an ITP Medical Seminar for health professionals only. Lectures and discussion groups featured leading specialists from the UK and US. They talked about ITP in adults, children, pregnancy, and women’s problems with ITP. The venue was Shuttleworth College, Old Warden Park, Biggleswade. The seminar was aimed at Health Professionals - Haematologists, Paediatricians, GPs, Obstetricians, Haematology Clinical Nurse Specialists, Paediatric nurses and any other interested health professional.

118 health professionals attended and the feedback received was extremely positive.

The programme included:-

  • Just how serious a disease is childhood ITP? Professor Sir John Lilleyman (Royal London Hospital)
  • Immunology and ITP. Dr. Helen Chapel (John Radcliffe Hospital)
  • Laparoscopic splenectomy versus open surgery. Mr. Ameet Patel (King’s College Hospital)
    The speakers jointly addressed questions from the floor
  • Evaluation and management of ITP in infants and children. Professor George Buchanan (University of Texas, USA)
  • Evaluation and management of ITP in adults. Professor James George (University of Oklahoma, USA)
  • ITP Research World Wide. Dr. Drew Provan (Royal London Hospital)
  • An overview of ITP with a review of the recent guidelines. Professor Adrian Newland (Royal London Hospital)
  • The speakers jointly addressed questions from the floor

2. The British Society of Haematologists invited the ITP Support Association to organise a 2 hour session at their Annual Meeting on 19th April 2004. This session was chaired by Professor Sir John Lilleyman and the speakers included Professor Adrian Newland, Professor Adrian Thrasher and Dr Thomas Kuhne from Switzerland.
