The ITP National Convention 2003
The ITP National Convention 2003 was held on Saturday 26th
April, in the Lecture Theatre and Moulton Hall of Kingswood School, just
outside Bath, Avon.
Lectures on ITP related subjects were delivered by three
leading specialists, Dr. Drew Provan, Dr. Paula Bolton-Maggs and Dr. Helen
Chapel.
- Dr. Bolton-Maggs, a Consultant Pediatric Hematologist at the Alder
Hey Children's Hospital, Liverpool discussed the differences between
acute and chronic lIP and whether either can be a precursor to more
serious conditions.
- Dr. Provan, a Senior Lecturer in Hematology, at the Royal London Hospital,
Whitechapel (the leading clinical centre for lTP in the UK) reviewed
the current developments in ITP treatment and research. A copy of Dr.
Provan's lecture slides can
be seen here.
- Dr. Helen Chapel is a Consultant Immunologist at The John Radcliffe
Infirmary in Oxford. She explained the function of the immune system
and why its malfunction can cause lTP
- Our fourth speaker was Deborah Kenny, Clinical Specialist ITP nurse
based at the Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel, (sponsored by The ITP
Support Association). Deborah reported on her first year in the post,
and outlined her future plans.
Several speakers referred to the new guidelines for the treatment of
ITP published in the British Journal of Haematology, 2003, 120, 574596.
They can be downloaded
here.
In the lecture theatre there were various display
stands by drug companies, plus ITP logo items and Christmas cards for
sale.
